I remember trying Kombucha last year some time and I couldn’t stand it. However I kept reading things about it and seeing fitness people who I follow posting about it all the time. So I decided to give it another try! I love it and I am so addicted to it now. If you haven’t heard of it, you are probably wondering what it is. Kombucha is a fermented drink made with tea, sugar, bacteria and yeast. It is a colony of bacteria and yeast, Kombucha tea is made by adding the colony to sugar and tea and allowing the mix to ferment. It results in an acidic beverage packed with probiotics, B vitamin and anti-oxidants. All Kombucha does contain a little percentage of alcohol because it is fermented so I was a little worried about consuming while pregnant. I asked my doctor and was told that anything store-bought is most likely fine and drinking 4 oz a day is perfectly fine. I was told not to drink home-brewed Kombucha as it is not pasteurized and therefore can be harmful while pregnant.
The Kombucha drink has been around for centuries and it is known to have a lot of health benefits when you drink it regularly. What are those health benefits…there are quite a few!
Boosts your immune system It is very high in anti-oxidants which are good for you and boost your immune system on regular consumption.
Helps with digestion and gut health It is a probiotic beverage which helps with fighting candida overgrowth. It can also help mood stability, mental clarity and can even reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia, depression and anxiety.
Joint health Kombucha contains Glucosamine which increases synovial hyaluronic acid production. This acid helps preserve the cartilage structure and prevent arthritic pain.
Detoxifies the body It has many enzymes and bacterial acids that your body produces. This reduces the load on your pancreas and eases the burden on your liver. It is also high in Glucaric acid and new studies have shown that this acid helps prevent cancer.
You can find Kombucha In health food stores, grocery stores even certain and restaurants. There are many different brands and flavours, I tend to look for the ones with the least amount of sugar in them. One of my favourites is GTS Gingerade, but I also love the Master Brew Pineapple and Peach. They are quite pricy ranging about $4.50 a bottle. I have recently found them at Costco and it is $18 for 6 of them, they also have a few other brands and flavours as well.
